ArtsHUB is a new series of creative workshops, organised by YAOW Theatre, which will explore aspects of ‘Performance, Technical Arts, Writing, and Art & Design’ by bringing together performers, creators and artists, to hone and learn skills and develop a professional network.

YAOW Theatre, a Windsor-based company since 2010, has produced classic and modern plays at a variety of venues, including The Old Court, in support of student and professional actors and stage managers building their careers.

‘Exploring the Craft of the Playwright’ will be led by Sara Howells. This discussion-based workshop will focus on aspects of playwriting and devising theatre, as well as providing resources on how to further develop as a playwright and where to take your work for performance.

Areas to be covered include:

  • Generating play ideas and house style
  • What point do you want the audience to go away discussing?
  • Character creation
  • Structuring plot and plot-lines
  • Dramaturgy by actors to re-draft
  • Show, don’t tell. Using the explicit and the implicit to good effect
  • Online resources to explore
  • Deeper exploration of writing believable dialogue

Sara has worked in various Arts jobs, including as a Drama teacher. She is the founding director of Phoenix Theatre Company, Windsor, which has produced original plays based on local history, written by Sara and performed at unusual places in the town.
